So implants are, in the dental world, relatively new within the last couple of decades, really. So what an implant allows us to do is if you have an area where a patient's missing a tooth, one of the options is a bridge. Well, in a bridge, you have to kind of trim down the tooth on either side to be able to put that tooth in there. And so with an implant, you don't. An implant is down into the bone. It's there for life. It's titanium. It's not going anywhere. We're able to go in and put a tooth on top of that to where you don't have something that comes in and out of the mouth.
So a dental implant basically takes an area that didn't have a tooth and puts a permanent tooth there without having to touch any of their teeth on either side of that. So sometimes there's not a tooth on the other side of that. So the patient only has the option of either wearing something removable that comes in and out, or dental implants allows us to place those implants in there, put teeth there that are permanently there. So a patient that would have the only option would've been to maybe wear a partial denture or a full denture can now have something permanent in place and have full function back that they maybe didn't have otherwise.
So really the dental implants allow us to provide that service to the patient.
What people don't realize, I think, and oftentimes is when they lose a tooth, they're not only losing the tooth, they're losing the bone that surrounds that tooth. So as a tooth comes out, the bone level that was here is going to start to recede over time, and it's going to recede away from the teeth on either side of that. And so it's important to replace that tooth in order to maintain that bone level. So the cool thing about implants is when you go in and place that implant down in the bone, rather than receding like it would with an extraction, that bone level stays exactly where it's at. So not only does it provide the support from the tooth that you're restoring with the implant, but it also saves the bone for the teeth on either side of that as well.

Change Your Life With Teeth Implants
The technology behind modern dental implants has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Although implants have been around for hundreds of years and have been made from a variety of materials, today’s dental implants are usually fabricated from medical-grade titanium. Your body will accept the titanium as part of itself; the implant and your jawbone will actually fuse into one within a few months.
After an oral surgeon places your implants and the healing process is complete, the implants will be ready to receive new replacement teeth using Dr. Fitts’s restorative dentist expertise. Depending on your needs and unique situation, he can replace one missing tooth with a single crown attached to an implant, or he can use two or more implants to anchor a sturdy bridge that will replace several missing teeth in a row.
Either way, the result will be a more aesthetically pleasing smile and a stronger bite. You’ll no longer feel compelled to hide your smile behind your hand when talking. Instead, you’ll have new confidence to speak your mind around others.
Plus, your biting and chewing capacity will be virtually 100 percent restored. Rather than having to pick and choose from the menu when dining out, you’ll enjoy the freedom to order anything you want, even a thick, juicy steak.
As an added bonus, your teeth implants will actually strengthen your jawbone by stimulating it to produce new bone cells. Instead of deteriorating and potentially changing your facial structure – making you look older than you really are – your jawbone will remain healthy and intact.
